The children of Dr. McGillicuddy in front of their house in Shepardsville.  Photo compliments of R. Steven Smith.

from an old made up photo album where photos were pasted in an old ledger book by William Ambrose Smith, husband of Catherine Delia McGillicuddy.   Actually the front cover says “Physicians Order Book”.   Some of the photos are quite messy from the glue.

Frank and Mariah Ferry are my mother’s family.  They are her great grandparents. Frank immigrated from Edinburgh, Scotland in either 1852 or 56.  He was the son of John and Catherine Gunn Ferry.  Mariah Middaugh Ferry was born in 1834 in Onterio, Canada (a generation or two of Loyalists, I believe).  Her claim to fame is that she descends from Dutch ancestors who settled New Netherland, what is now Wall Street in NY City. (Sarah Jorissen De Rapalje, claims she is first female European born at Fort Albany, New Netherland, 1625.) Mariah (or Maria, as I have found in some records) was the daughter of William Keurstade Middaugh b 1808 of Marbletown, NY and Sarah Ann Eveland b 1810 of Yarmouth, Elgin, Ontario, Canada.  Sarah and William were of Burlington, Lapeer Co., MI.

Most of my mother’s kin including Evans, Goodwin, Hubbard, Locke and Farnham immigrated to MI from NY and arrived in and around Ronald, Belding, North Plains, Otisco and Palo in Ionia County between 1845 – 1850.  They went on to settle in Montcalm County around Carson City and Crystal. Later generations were in Ovid/Middlebury area in Clinton/Shiawassee Counties.

This is a portion of the letter written 10 Sept 1930 by my great grandfather I.H. Evans (he is writing to my mothers father Jerome Fargo Evans):

“On your mother’s side we know nothing of your Grandfather Ferry’s heredity.  He was from Edinbough, Scotland.  He lived there till 15 years when he went to sea like a good Scotsman and then ran away and stayed in America.  He was all Scotch.  He was a good man, and at one time worth more than any other man in Ovid.  He lost his property by endorsing notes for a dishonest partner, and by speculation in wheat.  He died with only the farm left.  Once he operated a big saw-mill in Ovid and had the largest store in town.  At the same time Uncle Eugene (Eugene Beebe?) ran a store in town and he and uncle sort of ran Ovid.  Eugene’s father (Constantine Beebe) was a physician and so was uncles’ brother, Edward (Beebe).  His other uncles were druggists in Detroit, and one was a doctor (Don’t know who these people are).

Grandmother Ferry was a direct desendent fro the Prince of Orange.  She was a Hollander, full blooded.  One of her ancestors was a merchant in Holland, whose estate was estimated a hundred years after his death at $100,000,000 to which you children are direct heirs.  They owned the very 160 acres on which Wall street is located.  Once the heirs wanted me to undertake to secure back the property; but when I read up on the reports, and saw that the two decisions had been handed down by the supreme court that since the title was in the name of our heirs and had never been transfered, the court would order it remain as it was.
